Registered Charity Number: 1093956

Gateshead Harriers were founded in 1904 as Gateshead St. Mary's Church Running Club. Originally for men only, ladies joined in 1951. The club moved to it's present site in 1956. Today we cater for all athletes, from 8yrs+ to veterans in all disciplines through winter and summer.
We train at least two evenings a week and compete in road races, cross-country, track & field and marathons.

New members are always welcome and you can train at any level of fitness, from sedate jogs to competition level. Our excellent facilities include comprehensive weights room, male and female changing rooms with showers and a large hall which is also available for training purposes twice a week during the winter months.

Training sessions:
Training is at Gateshead International Studium on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 6:30pm till 8:00pm (unless otherwise arranged with your coach).

We hope you will enjoy your athletics with us and have many years of successful competition. We will endeavour to help your progress and development in your chosen event(s) with the help of qualified club coaches.

John Corrigan died in hospital on 16 June. He was a member of the club since 1936 and apart from competing right through beyond his 80th birthday he served the club in all the positions including, Treasurer, Secretary and Chairman.
In recognition of his dedication John was made a club life member. In fact John would still attend Committee meetings until just a few years ago. More recently John would come down to the stadium and meet up with one of his contemporaries, Jim Burn, and after watching some of the younger athletes training they could be seen walking back into Gateshead for “a quick pint” (they would always refuse a lift!)

In 1999 John competed in the World Veterans Championships and although he did not beat some of the foreign athletes, he shot to the top of the British rankings for 3000 metres.

John did not restrict his calm analytical interest and support just to Gateshead Harriers, he was a member of the Northern and North Eastern Committees for many years and was a past President of the latter.

John was a true unsung hero.
